Re: [a/s] Airstream Conservatory
Jay,
Before I settled on the notion of full-timing in an Airstream I *strongly*
considered buying some land in Iowa(my home state) and building a rammed
earth, solar heated home. After reading everything I could on the subject it
was clear that it doesn't take many windows to be comfortable in both
seasons. I believe the recommended ratio of windows to walls on the perimeter
was 20% for the midwest, but to be certain I highly recommend the book The
Passive Solar House by James Kachadorian. Published by Real Goods. If your
library doesn't have it its available at www.realgoods.com. On the positive
side, using fewer windows means less expensive construction, and you needn't
sacrifice beauty with careful design. In addition, the book includes
instructions for building a "solar slab" which is perfect for your idea since
your A/S enclosure would likely have a cement foundation and floor. Hope this
is helpful.
