[a/s] campgrounds open

Hi List,
We'll be heading from Greenwood, South Carolina to Iowa City at the end of
this month and are concerned we will find most campgrounds or parks closed
for the winter.  Where can we expect to find some open ones, and what route
would anyone suggest?
Another question.  There is a Thermix catalytic heater on the furnace
cabinet wall, left as you enter.  We can't seem to make it work. There may
be something missing, there is an opening on the right side, looks to be the
size of a gas hose, but the hose is connected from the back.  We can't
figure out how to light it.
