Gerald,

There is a simpler soloution.  Just give the strap one or two twists and the
drumming should stop.  I use that trick when hauling my canoe strapped to
the car top.  See this photo:  http://www.spearfishcreek.com/pics/car.jpg  I
noticed the straps are not in the photo but they run over the top of the
inverted canoe to the car top carrier and not bow and stern.
