Here's the first of several short notes from Rollins Pond CG - NYS
DEC - July 2007.
When there are no hookups, how long does 50 gallons of water last?
Simple answer: It all depends.
At Rollins Pond CG, our 50 gallon water supply lasted more than a week.
BUT ------ at this Campground
1 - there are public rest rooms (flush toilets).
2 - there is a shower building with individual stalls and no meters
for hot water.
3 - there are community water spigots every 2-3 campsites.
Sometimes we arrive with a nearly empty water tank. I bring 200 feet
of white water hose, an outside sediment filter, an outside charcoal
filter and a "water thief" (12" long rubber hose with a 3/4" inside
diameter and a cable clamp for attaching to a spigot). There is a 3rd
filter under the bathroom sink and a 4th filter under the kitchen sink.
ALSO ------ we carry a water container (with its own spigot) for CG
water on our picnic table. Campground water can be used for:
a - dishwashing. Boil it in tea kettle on the Airstream's propane
stove or on our outside Coleman two burner stove,
b - hand washing with a "soap on a rope" (or soap scraps in a nylon
stocking) hung on a tree limb or clothes line rope.
The benefit of using CG water this way is our Airstream's tank of
quadrupled filtered water lasts a week and is used for:
- making morning coffee,
- recipes requiring water,
- brushing our teeth,
- shaving, shampoos and
- cleaning of wounds.
With frugal usage, our fresh water supply easily lasts a week to 10
days (or more).
In July, the weather has been in the 50s at night and 70s during the
day with just enough wind for casual sailing (no white caps yet).
Kayaking and canoeing are enjoyable. Campfires nightly (delivered
daily $5) are great fun with two pre-school grand daughters.
