Hi John,
I was concerned about telltale signs of the same thing with my 1987 GMC Vandura 
2500 (hypoid splattering over the differential housing at some point in the past). 
When I had my transmission serviced and lubed with synthetic ATF, I also had the 
differential checked and it was OK.  What you have told us now might explain why I 
had that splattering and the differential still checked out OK.
