Bob,
 Clipping the cable to splice on a new piece is half-assed, IMO. It's
actually easier to make the connections under the trailer anyway, and
they're protected under there. A cable splice with a big ol' wad of tape
looks like crap and is a potential trouble spot.

Yeah, maybe if you are in a big hurry to get on the road, but you won't
spend another 30 minutes or so to do it right.

My unvarnished opinion, YMMV. :-)
