Robert,
Your CS-840 most likely replaced and performs the same function as the
original Univolt converter which is to supply 12 volt direct current power for
lighting, appliances, and recharging your 12 volt battery or batteries
when the trailer is connected to 110 volt ac shore power. A/S
trailers began using all 12 volt systems beginning in the mid-'60s in order that
lighting and appliances can be used when isolated from hookups as well as when
using shore power when staying in RV parks.
The Univolt and similar replacements were satisfactory for Wally Byam's
intended usage of Airstream trailers and to most owner-users. Most of the
criticism of Univolt systems probably originates with folks who use their
trailers during extended periods in isolated locations without shore
power requiring specialized solar panels and more exotic batteries which
will maximize solar power generation and storage. For most of us A/S
owners who use their trailers without hookups occasionally and also utilize
utilities provided by RV parks during portions of our travel, original equipment
Univolts and standard RV batteries will be adequate.
Hope this adds to your understanding.
Harvey
