Toby,
 I put Firestone air lifts on the rear of my Dodge to be able to
maintain the ride height no matter how much weight I carry. There's a
small 12VDC compressor under the hood and a Switch/Valve + guage under
the dash to adjust the pressure.

To use it for other purposes, I installed a valve in the line going to
the air lifts to close it off, a pressure-relief valve, and a
quick-coupler like the ones in my compressed air system in the shop.
Also, a toggle switch under the hood to run the compressor w/o someone's
having to hold the switch under the dash.

Frankly, I've never actually tried using it to pump up a tire, but see
no reason why it won't work beautifully. The compressor will easily put
out 100+ PSI, and it pumps up the air lifts quite quickly.

JC Whitney (http://www.jcwhitney.com) sells air lifts, onboard
compressors, etc. If you want to add a set to your vehicle, you must get
a kit made specifically for it so it'll bolt on. It took a couple of
hours to drill the 4 mounting holes in the frame near each rear wheel,
then bolt the bags in place. More time was required to install the
compressor, but the whole thing is easily done in a day. Of course, if
all you wanted was the compressor, that can be done also. Whitney sells
the compressor kits seperate from the air lifts. That would also be a
source for a replacement compressor for use in your A/S if you wanted to
maintain the original pressure system.
