[VAC] Spare tire

What's the general consensus re: carrying spare tires? I'm pro-spare
personally, but admit I'm not crazy about hanging that much extra weight on
either the tongue or the rear bumper, and don't really want to lose storage
space in my truck, either. Maybe the spare on a bumper/frame mounted rear
carrier would be enough to offset the weight of either a larger front water
tank or extra forward batteries.  Still, that's a lot of cantilevered stress
on the frame.
Any unique solutions to handling a spare (with some attention to
aesthetics)? Anyone done an under-trailer setup with a crank-down mechanism?
