It is unclear just what panels you a speaking about.  Typically the 
plastic is bonded to a backing sheet.  If you are talking about shower 
interiors have have put in new paneling over the 1/4" ply type wood 
shower walls (had vinyl fabric which was removed and originally held with 
a type of contact cement that was still rather soft and had lost it 
adhesion qualities) and simply used some panel adhesive.

If you state the year and model of your unit and type of bath (rear etc) 
you might trigger bigger  and more knowlegeable response.
