Evan , as Paul and others have said before, I think you are right on the
edge with that olds van.  A little 3.8 Liter V6 with auto would be fine,
........in Kansas or on the flat.  In California on Mountain Springs
grade or Conejo Pass, or the Grapevine, or almost any other, take your
pick, you will be relegated to D2 and about  35 MPH.  Get friendly with
your Transmission repair man.  If it is a 1968 Safari, ....it is a 22
footer, in either the 22T, or 22D configuration.   In either case, enjoy
it, and load it lightly.  I've been thru the rockies and most mountains
in the lower 48, and I've never seen any grades or passes tougher than
California.  Welcome to the list.
