Just to remind everyone that, when using WiFi anywhere, your data is not 
secure. You are essentially on the same network with anyone within range. 
Also, signals flying through the air can be sniffed and read using free and 
relatively easy-to-use software. Things like emails, passwords, and other 
sensitive info are the types of things that can be stolen. Make sure when 
shopping online, any time but especially using WiFi, that SSL (you will see 
https:// in the URL and little yellow lock icon at the bottom of your 
browser) is protecting your transaction.
Consider using a program like Anonymizer 
(http://www.anonymizer.com/default.html) for open hot spot surfing. It 
encrypts your data and is nearly impossible for hackers or wanna-be snoopers 
to decipher. You will take a bit of a performance hit while using these 
types f encryption programs, but IMHO it is worth it not to be hacked. VPNs 
are another option, but tend to be a bit advanced for the average user who 
just wants to travel with their laptop (I like Himachi..free open source 
works beautifully).
At the bare minimum make sure your version of Windows is patched and up to 
date . If you are using XP you need to have SP2 and turn on the Windows 
firewall. If you use another firewall (for instance, the Norton or McAffee 
firewall, Sygate, Zone Alarm, etc) then make sure it is enabled and the 
Windows firewall is disabled.

Sniffing passwords and looking at others' data is not a theory, but a tested 
and true task that I have performed in the interest of learning about 
security. I would guess that about 80% of the wifi traffic I encounter is 
unencrypted and those folks are making themselves vulnerable to theft or 
their PC's to attack. Don't let yours be one of them.
