Dan, I second that emotion.  I spent many unhappy hours removing 
silicone that had failed in its mission to keep water out.  Paint 
thinner/ mineral spirits  and popsicle sticks was my technique.

Vulkem is very sticky and never really dries hard, so it makes and keeps 
a good seal for years on aluminum.  I agree it is an unattractive 
substance, but it is not bad if you get it into the cracks using your 
fingers to push it in and smooth it ( rubber gloves, the blue kind ) 
then use thousands of paper towels and mineral spirits to wipe it off of 
the surrounding areas and make a smooth bead. some folks use a glue 
syringe to get a smaller tidier bead.

This is one of the really tiresome part of vintage AS ownership, but 
unless you want to start replacing floors, you need to do it. On the 
other hand, if you just have at it and get it in every possible hole and 
crack in one marathon, you will be good to go for years. But not with 
silicone.
