Hi Chris,

I'm guessing that the back of your truck is pretty packed with heavy 
things. ( FYI list, Chris full times with wife and 2 boys and builds 
timber frame houses )

I would first look at where the heaviest stuff is in the truck and try 
to get most of the ballast as far forward as possible.  This will be 
inconveniant but the truck needs to start off level.  All my tools live 
on the floor of the "back seat" of the truck and the all important rock 
collection lives under the seat.  So the generator might need to be in 
the front of the bed where you can't get at it.

The stuff in the trailer should be loaded so that the big weights are 
over the wheels as much as possible.  You need some tongue weight for 
stability, but I think 1000 may be a little high. So, for example, all 
my canned food is right next to the wheel wells, and I try not to move 
with a full black or gray and only a light load in the water tank.

I agree with Oliver about the truck being level, you need those front 
wheels staunchly on the ground for safety.
