What you're speaking of is bio diesel. It's pretty much universal in 
Germany. In the U.S. it's available in dilutions; B20 (20%) seems to be 
the most readily available.  I've found anything from B5 to B100. I've 
been told to cut B100 at least 50% with "dino diesel", and I've done 
so, though I don't know the precise reasons. Might just be in cooler 
climates, as bio diesel gels at a higher temp than dino (though dino 
needs to be "winter blended" in cold climates as well..)

I run it whenever I can find it. My experience is that it burns 
cleaner, I get better mileage, more power, and the exhaust smells like 
french fries.. I have no modifications to my truck. They are not 
necessary unless you are running "home brew" (see below).
Cost is variable, but usually about the same as dino. I found one 
dealer in Tucson last year who provided an on the spot rebate for state 
tax, making the price slightly lower than dino. He had B20 and B100.
I  google "bio diesel" and the city I'm going to, and I usually get 
hits with stations that carry it. There are also national bio diesel 
organizations that offer locators.

I have a buddy back in WI who brews his own from restaurant waste 
cooking oil. I'm not that hard core, but I applaud his efforts.
