Assuming that the starter is turning the engine over and it is not starting, 
try this.  The next time it will not start, open the gas cap and have 
someone nearby the opening to listen.  As soon as you turn the ignition key 
on, you should hear the whine of the fuel pump in the tank.  If you hear 
nothing then you might have a fuel pump relay that is going bad or a fuel 
pump in the tank that is shorting out.  Several years ago we had a problem 
with an Astrovan and found that the wiring in the fuel pump was all burned 
up.  Chevy replaced the fuel pump.  Several months ago we had 3 failures to 
start although the starter was cranking the motor with some authority.  We 
did not hear the fuel pump whining like we usually do.  We bypassed the 
relay and the pump worked.  I replaced the relay and the same thing happened 
again a month later.  I have traced it to the wiring from the fuel pump 
relay on the firewall.  I giggled it and the van has been starting up fine 
ever since.  I feel that it is either in the connection or the wiring within 
a foot of the relay.  This may be a long shot but what the heck.
