Someone suggested using the 'fridge as mouse-proof storeage, which
sounds smart, except that I am thinking when a 'fridge is stored for a
period of time people often like to prop the door open so it will not
smell funky when they use it again.

I think you might try a cooler to store things in - it would keep the
mice out, plus it would slow down the temperature cycles.  It would
not keep things from freezing, or keep them from thawing, but the
temperature change inside the cooler would be much slower than outside
(because of the insulation).  I think this would be of benifit for any
sort of material stored within, even if it was dry.

Storing materials inside a closed refridgerator would give the same
benefit, so long as you are not concerned about getting mold / mildew
/ odors inside the unit.
