I would like to add my take on this thread.

I tow a probably 9,000 lb trailer(1972 29' Ambassador), with my 3/4 ton 
Dodge Pickup. I have the old Reese dual cam hitch.

Besides this rig, I have towed various horse trailers with various vehicles.

I want to emphasize that what hitch you use is important, but that the 
suitability of your tow vehicle  and the adjustment of your hitch are 
MUCH more important.  And even more important, that your driving 
technique must change to reflect the size and weight of your rig, the 
traffic situation, and the weather conditions you are in. No hitch is 
going to compensate for bad judgement.

If your trailer sways in high winds or when an 18 wheeler goes by, then 
your rig is not safe.

If you want the best advice on your tow set up, go to a place that sells 
and deals with horse trailers. They can help you adjust your hitch ,and 
since they are selling neither RV's nor tow vehicles, you are more 
likely to get a straight opinion.  Having a wreck with an RV is bad 
enough, but having a wreck with horses in back is a nightmare that 
keeps  folks very careful and conservative about taking chances while 
towing.
