I don't think the hitch had a lot to do with preventing what happened. The
author's take (and he was there) was that they were overtired, in a rush,
towing too fast for conditions, over confident, and hadn't pre-practiced
emergency maneuvers.
So all of the above factors piled on one another lead to the crash. It
wouldn't have been prevented by a Hensley or any other hitch. IMHO
