First, measure for the size you need, then tape (masking) over the cut line
(both upper and lower sides). Mark the line, then, with a rigid straightedge,
score the line with a box knife or some other sharp cutter.

Now, you can cut with a sharp saw blade, and shouldn't have any splintering. Cut
just on the proud side of the line that you scored with the blade.
