[A/S] computer and telephone for traveling digital radio

Hi Travelers,
Well, it looks like we're going to make our first long trip this
winter...3 months of sw US and Mexico.  I've never been out with the
trailer for such an extended time.   I'm getting ready to buy a laptop
and some kind of cell phone service, and would appreciate any advice or
information you might send to me.  
My needs are to use the laptop for access to the internet, to double as
a TV of sorts, with cable connection, and to hook up with communications
like telephones, for instance.  
From Canada, I don't know if I should get a Verizon or other cell phone
service started... does Verizon cover Mexico at all?  My lack of
experience tells me to get advice!  
 
Also, do you recommend digital radio?
 
I'll appreciate your thoughts and opinions.
