RE: [A/S] Pulling an Airstream trailer

Hunter said "I would run from any dealer who said you can. To be safe I
suggest people new to towing tow within 25% of the tow rating of the
vehicle. IOW with a 5,000# limit you would be better to keep the trailer at
3,750#. Which leaves out all Airstreams except maybe the newest one, the
base camp."

Mr. Higgins - There are lots of dealers that will sell you any trailer they
can, and your problems with safe towing are just that, your problems. Your
mercedes SUV is a great vehicle for lots of purposes, but not for towing an
Airstream. Towing any trailer puts you at the mercy of the weather and other
crazies on the roads, to mention only two. High winds, rain and
speeding/overloaded 18 wheelers can and do cause the trailer to "wag the
dog", to cause your trailer to start swaying back & forth dangerously. You
need a longer wheel base, the strongest brakes on the road and more tow
vehicle engine power to controll that sway and not have the trailer flip
over, often flipping the tow vehicle at the same time. This topic is one
that appears in this List often. You should check out previous posts on this
subject for real expert advice before you make any purchase of a travel
trailer. And BTW, this advise applies to most any trailer, not just
Airstreams. God luck.
