Thanks for the suggestion.  Actually, I have done this and 
it works.  It's just a pain to disconnect and reconnect 
the bars.

I think ultimately, as Andy suggests, I need to replace 
the axles.  They are definitely sagging.  I suppose with a 
15 year old trailer it is to be expected. With axles that 
did not sag I would get about 3 or 4 inches of increased 
ground clearance.  That would put the trailer back to its 
original height so it should not impact towing.  It seems 
to tow great now and I get no indication that the old axes 
are causing problems with vibration or the like.

You are right about Airstreams being much lower than other 
travel trailers.  I never realized just how much lower 
they sit to the ground.  This is particularly problematic 
with the long trailers (mine is 32') due to the 
amplification of any dips or rises in the road surface.

One of these days I'll replace the axles but for now, with 
three kids and one of them starting college in a year, I 
have other financial priorities!
