On my 2004 Silverado 1500, they welded an angle iron from the reciever 
to where the hitch mounts to the frame(allowing just enough room for 
the spare tire). They also added some metal to the back of the reciever 
along the bottom and some welds to re-inforce it as well. Some metal 
was also added around the reciever and where factory welds were not 
complete they finished them as well as some additional welds to add 
strength.
All of this was done to prevent flexing and to prevent the hitch from 
bending.
