Here's an even more dreadful story, but shows why you need a 
good truck.

I took Darth Vader (97 Dodge Ram 3/4 ton long bed, stretch 
cab ) to Walt's before I left FL so he could check the 
brakes and all that good stuff.

He opened them up and said I hadn't had brakes for quite a 
while !!!

My truck stops the trailer, even w/o brakes ! Yikes.

As an aside, I have put in many miles towing horses who 
don't like to be plastered against the front by hard 
braking. So I tend to drive pretty cautiously.  Even with 
the brakes, it still takes the trailer a while to stop.
