[A/S] Airstream Wanna Be :-)

After years of taking short trips (60 days or less) with our '67 22' 
Safari, we decided to take it on a 90 day trip and follow the Oregon 
Trail to the Pacific. That trip included a Vintage Airstream Caravan in 
the Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho and the WBCCI International Rally in 
Boise before returning to Upstate New York.

The long and the short of it was our Safari was comfortable for both of 
us during the entire three months. As for being roomy, we found it 
plenty roomy - right up to the 89th day.  <grin>

As an aside, we have 1987 Suburban (naturally aspirated 6.2L diesel) 
which had been doing a good job of towing our Safari throughout eastern 
United States.  The Oregon Trail trip would take us West of the 
Mississippi into "real" mountains. We wanted a good test of its 
capabilities. We got it.

The long and the short of it was our Suburban was both comfortable and 
capable. It too, was plenty roomy for us. As for towing out West, it 
had dogged dependability and undeniable persistence so long as we kept 
in mind two things: the fable about a tortoise and a hare and an old 
saying about results are what you expect; consequences are what you get.

The Suburban's performance was in sharp contrast to towing with our 
1975 Mercury Station (460CID V8) with its rumbling dual exhausts and a 
bearish attitude at the slightest touch on the accelerator pedal. The 
next time we tow our Safari west of the Mississippi, we'll take the 
Mercury.
