Patti,
Have you tried a "chain" wrench? It's a special wrench for tight places. You
wrap the chain (attached to the working end of a vise grip like wrench)
around the nut, squeeze two handles to tighten the chain's grip on the nut,
and rotate the nut. You may need two chain wrenches to hold the other side
of the fitting also. Otherwise, you may be twisting the copper tubing. 

I've got two different size chain wrenches in my tool box. One is a Sears;
the other was inherited. I'm not sure if Home Depot, Lowe's or Ace Hardware
has them, but check them.
