Sounds like you failed to raise the upper arms and tension them. Once you
pull the awning fully out on the roller (only a single ply of fabric will
remain wrapped around the roller), the inner arms lift out of the catch on
the outer arms and insert into the space between the roller end and the end
cap (on each end). They hook over the rod at the center of the roller.
Then you pull outwards on the inner arms (now the upper arms) and they will
tension and lock. Get as much tension on them as possible. This will fully
extend the awning away from the trailer, but NOT raise it (that is step 2).
To release the tension, you pull the round knob about midpoint on the arm.
Once the inner (now upper) arms are in place and tensioned, you raise the
awning by extending the lower (outer) arms by releasing the round know on
those arms and pulling upwards. There are several locking positions so you
can raise the overall awning a notch at a time if only a single person is
involved. It does NOT hurt for one side to be lower than the other, in
fact, if there is a chance of rain, you should always have one side lower so
that the water will run off rather than puddle in the center of the awning.

Hope this makes some sense. Seeing it done once makes it much easy to
understand.
