the vehicle essentially goes sideways in the steered direction INSTEAD of
the front wheels causing the vehicle to effectively pivot at the rear
wheels. This in turn causes almost no pivoting at the hitch ball as seen by
the trailer.



Something is not right here. If the vehicle went sideways and there was no 
pivoting at the hitch ball you would not be able to make a turn. Actually when 
the front wheels are turning to the left the rear wheels are turning to the 
right.
