[A/S] Mileage better or not with diesel

I can only speak about my own truck with any certainty.

I have a 2004, with the 6.0L and with only 4,000 kms (2500 Miles) on
the truck, I am already getting 24 MPG Highway, 17 City (miles not
kilometers) This is all that I am absolutely sure about. Now
then.....

I also belong to a couple of diesel forums, and all the following is
from other owners statements. The 2003 6.0L diesels had some
problems, but not very many were mileage. After reprogramming in
October 2003, almost all of the mileage problems that there were,
seemed to be corrected. The 2002 Ford trucks had 7.3L diesels and
in that, the last year of the 7.3L, they were probably at their
best. Except for the massive amount of power the 6.0L diesel is
putting out, and the availability of Ford's new five speed
automatic, I wouldn't mind having a 2002. I just couldn't get one
new at the end of 2004. Who knew.

And the oil change question? It is getting to be an opinionated
debate, so I for one am not going to address it further.
