Why do you say that?  Diesel fuel has more btu's.
With my 2000 powerstroke (and super chip), I get:
City - 18mpg
Highway (bobtail) - 22-24 mpg
Hiway (towing) - 15-16 mpg

I run the speed limit on the highways, even when towing.  Trailer is only 
about 5,000 lbs. though.
