Hi Renee,

The chaplain's cautions about not cranking up the agitator 
are good. In addition, use only cold or luke warm water. I 
also suggest ammonia to help loosen the stains, but not 
bleach which will weaken the fabric. AND NOT AMMONIA AND 
BLEACH TOGETHER=bad poison gas.

As for dying them, it is hard to get a good even color on 
older material.
