[A/S] P.O. general delivery

A general question about general delivery: We're reaching a segment of 
our journey in which we won't be staying with anyone we know, or for 
anywhere for more than a week, and most likely not at all in RV parks. 
We're having friends back home send mail out in weekly batches, which 
has worked well up until now. I've heard that sending mail to a 
specific post office marked with our names and "hold for general 
delivery" is an efficient way to have this done. Can anyone offer 
experience and tips? I've heard that using smaller post offices (in 
small towns) can be more efficient.
