According to Verizon's site, digital OnStar subscribers can get one of the 
Verizon plans to use the OnStar unit as a cellphone, too.

Here's a paste from their site, and notice at the bottom the number to call 
OnStar to see if your equipment complies. I'll bet they can tell you right 
off what model OnStar you have  right over the phone.

If you don't have a digital unit ask whether your unit is upgradeable, some 
apparently are, some are not. If it turns out you can upgrade I'd wait a bit, 
maybe until 2006 to get the upgraded unit installed. There is still a lot of 
shaking out in the cellular marketplace and still several technologies vying 
for dominance.
