compare the distance of front/rear axles and stance (width between right/left
wheels) and WEIGHT of either of the above to the VW bus.

I think that either your 5/4T pickup or your Lincoln is going to be a far better
candidate for pulling any trailer than would be the VW.  I understand that you
are deriding the usage of BHP as a determining factor for towing a trailer.
