Hi Ben,

My opinion is a 3/4 ton crew cab pick up.  Ford, Chevy, Dodge....... with the 
*big* V8 or diesel. IMO the best diesels are the Ford 7.3, the Chevy Duramax 
and the Dodge Cummins.

Second choice would be a Ford Excursion or a 3/4 ton Suburban.  1 ton vans if 
you like vans.

I tow an 8,000# trailer with an F250, crew cab, 4x4, 7.3 diesel.  I couldn't 
be happier. I did try to pull it, empty, with a 1/2 ton 350 Suburban and 
wasn't happy at all... not enough ooomph on hills.
