Brad,

I agree with most about taking the southern route to California.  We 
were towing a '87 Excella(34') with a F-350/7.3liter diesel.  We took 
I-5 up through most of California until we got to Redding and then went 
to the coast.  We took the coast all the way to Astoria, Oregon.  We 
finally ended up in Vancouver, B.C.  When we returned, we stayed on I-5 
all the way down to Bakersfield and it was much easier grades.  There 
are some rough grades near the Oregon/Calif. border but I still think I 
prefer this route.
