[A/S] buying used - pitfalls, concerns

What things should I be on the lookout for when considering the purchase 
of a used A/S?

In my search, I was originally not considering used units, mostly since 
I'm not handy, it's probably better to buy new -- but before I actually 
plunk down all that money and order a trailer, I've decided to go look 
at two used ones for sale that are local.

Are there things I should be alert to?  Like with cars, are there ways 
to find out if the trailer has been in a serious accident?  Neither 
trailer is extremely old (one is early or mid 90's, the other is a 1981 
Excella).
