Your house battery SHOULD be connected to do this. But just in case he 
checked the emergency brakes and they didn't work for him he might have 
assumed another battery was needed.

You might want to verify operation: Place a magnetic compass just below the 
wheel hub (i.e., near the magnet) and have someone pull the disconnect pin 
while you watch the compass needle. You should see it move as the magnets 
operate. Lube the pin before replacing it.
