I have two vintage tow vehicles, a 1973 Dodge W200 Powerwagon, camper 
special, 360 CI 2V 4.1 axle, which I have owned since new and a 1977 
Lincoln Continental, 460 4V 2.75 axle, which I recently purchased.  No 
modifications were made to the Dodge since it is a camper special, I 
added a transmission cooler to the Lincoln, there is no special towing 
package for the Lincoln, although they recommend a 3.0 axle for towing 
up to 6000 lbs.  Both vehicles tow our 1979 23' Safari (5800 lb gross), 
although the power and comfort of the Lincoln is fantastic.  Here in 
Orange, CA, I found a shop which fabricates hitches and the cost for the 
Lincoln was about the same as the bolt-on Reese I purchased for the Dodge.

Last weekend at the El Camino Real Unit of WBCCI San Clemente Rally, 
there was a mid 1960's Olds Cutlass Station Wagon and a single axle 
Safari on its first outing.  The owner was pleased with the 
performance.  If you select a vehicle with single master cylinder and 
drum brakes, you should upgrade to dual master cylinder and at least 
front disc brakes, common upgrades.
