I don't believe that using wi-fi makes your computer any more susceptible to 
intrusion by others. You should use a firewall even on your home computer.

With wi-fi however, since you are transmitting everything "over the public 
airwaves" so to say, anything you send could be intercepted. This is why one 
needs to use encryption if one is doing banking, etc, online.
