I am not Terry, and am also not a Ford "expert", but in case you are 
interested, I bought a new 1970 Ford LTD Station Wagon in Dec '69 with 
factory-installed towing package. It had a Ford-published tow rating of 
5000 lbs.

390 engine, I think. Actual cost about $5200. Ah - those were the days...

And, for reference, Cadillac sedans around 1996 had that same 5000 pound 
factory rating. I asked at the '96 homecoming rally at the Caddy vendor 
site. Caddy was there giving out mugs.

The factory publishes these ratings, as determined by factory engineers - 
you don't really need to ask an outside "expert".
