the point I was trying to make and which you have already reached, is that with
the awning partially opened (about two feet), there is NO driving-rain-leaking
thru the vent.
but when it is completely rolled up and locked down, water APPARENTLY backs up
and into the vent (under the flap cover - which is the same on a '77).  I think
that we need a raised lip around the vent's roof exit with a lid that closes
down on top of that one inch high lip.  kind of like a roof air vent in the
middle of the roof of a trailer.   

you know, there is something else which might be adaptable... the bathroom vent
fan... hmmmm
