The 1979 style vent has a flap which covers the round outlet for the 
fan.  the flap is about 10x8 and is curved to match the radius of the 
trailer where the top of the wall meets the roof.

To activate the range hood fan, there is a lever in the locker above 
the stove.  Pulling down the lever opens the flap (pushed open by a 
cable) and turns on the fan.

I don't think it would be a simple task to try to and fit this system 
with a standard exterior vent.

There is a round piece of weatherstriping on the back side of the 
flap which is supposed to seal against the fan outlet when it is 
closed.  Although I can't see any light coming thru from inside, it 
probably doesn't seal tightly against driving rain anymore.

I might see if I can adjust the cable so it pulls the flap closed 
more tightly, or look into replacing the weatherstrip disk.

As someone pointed out before, the hinge for the flap is right at the 
bottom of the rolled up awning, so caulking around it, and possibly 
even removing the flap to replace the weatherstrip might be 
impossible.  I've considered propping the awning open about a foot, 
which might give me the access room I need.
