Airstream had one back in the seventies that worked very much like
what you described. The technology may have been a bit crude at that
time which may have had something to do with why it didn't catch on.

I can see the possibility these days for putting sensors in the ball
coupler to control braking both for sway as well as for replacing the
standard controller. Can you imaging a smart coupler that would keep
the trailer in its place behind the tow vehicle all by itself no
matter what the driver was trying to do? I'll have to suggest this to
the prof at the local Univ for his EE/ME entreprenuer senior class.

I find the comments about panic emergency and denigrating the use of
the brake controller override interesting. Is it just my perception or
are folks actually talking down proper driver training and preparation
and behavior in emergencies?
