In over 12 years we have never had a water tank it's self fail. The 
plastic it is made of  is very flexible, so unless the tank was 
absolutely full and froze it is very unlikely the tank is damaged. The 
typical failure is a fitting that attaches to the tank.
It would help if you describe the whole sequence of events. Did you fill 
or just add water to the tank before you turned on the pump? Were you 
hooked to pressured water (a faucet).
Water leaking out of the tank won't spray. There is no pressure in the 
tank only after it goes through the pump. If there is a leak in the 
system between the tank and the pump the pump will not be able to draw 
and you will get no water pressure anywhere.
