Used to be safety and economy. Now probably mostly economy, since very few 
have sidewall steel anymore. Your running friction is less, which means 
better fuel economy. Your tire wear is less, so they last longer. Years ago 
I ran Michelins with steel sidewalls, and blowouts were almost impossible 
with those. Most tires these days have non-steel sidewall plys.
