"What tires should I use on my trailer" comes up regularly and I've 
always hesitated to put in my 2 cents worth because I know it will be 
poo pooed by the "experts" out there but I guess I'll do it this time 
because, honestly, I'm tired of some folks telling us "it has to be 
this way" or "this is the only safe way to tread your trailer.

Obviously, I disagree with a lot of the advice and I'll tell you why.

I'd put my towing experience up against most anybody out there – that 
doesn't make me an expert but I do know what has worked for me over 
the last 25 – 30 years.  But first, before I go any further, 
everything that follows is predicated on the fact that what ever tow 
vehicle, trailer, tires, hitch, etc, etc,,used, someone has taken the 
time to set-up and balance everything perfectly.

That being said, here is what I've done on my 21' 1993 Sovereign, max 
wet weight 5000#.  I went to Wal-mart and bought four Goodyear 
Trackers, 235/75X15.  I know, I know, Light Truck tires.  First I 
used Wal-mart because the price was right but, more importantly, if I 
ever have trouble I know I'm no more than a few miles away from one 
of their stores.  Why the Trackers?  The 235/75X15 is a load range C 
which means four tires will carry 7940 pounds at 50 psi.  I don't 
want a trailer tire that I have to pump up to 70 – 80 pounds.  I want 
a tire with a little more flex in the sidewall because I want a 
softer ride that doesn't shake everything to pieces in the trailer.  
In fact, I only inflate my trailer tires to about 35 – 40 pounds to 
achieve that.  And at only 5000# max I have more that enough sidewall 
ridgedity to keep the tire running straight and true and to keep heat 
buildup to a minimum.  You'll hear other opinions but I feel that 
going to load range D or E is gross overkill and totally unecessary.  
Anyway, take it for what it's worth.
