Here in the Tampa bay aera Home depor ofter has a product called Sand ply It 
id imported from south America Better than the local plywoods but not as good 
as Baltic Birch which in many cases is over kill I used door skins for the 
center pannels in the pannel doors (All28 of them)in my trade wind they are 
Veneered with !/8in walnut diamonds to give a sunburst design.Almost any ply can be 
sucessfult veneered if done with with Epoxy and fiberglass cloth as an 
underlayment.
