It's hard to see on my coach because the doors are completely edged with 
aluminum extrusions -- but apparently the core between the laminate 
sheets is plywood, about 1/2".

Strange.  My much narrower doors are supported by staunch full length 
piano hinges that don't look like they are going anywhere no matter 
what.

That one is a bit easier to answer.  The vibration of travel (on the 
road or in the sky) tends to back out screws.  Were your a/s 
constructed with screws, you would be putting it back together after 
each trip, not still enjoying it 25-35 years after it first was put 
together.
